Disgruntled Darlings

Okay you wouldn't know it to look at them, but apparently my children are poor unfortunate souls, whose mother just is the queen of mean. The reason this time? I will not let them have televisions or computers in their bedrooms, and apparently those were high on their Christmas lists.

I am a huge believer in the family being together when we are at home. My computer is smack dab in my living room where there is nothing to hide...and John Mark does not care for computers at all so the only people I am battling for mine is the girls (I always win).

The TV is right here also which works perfectly during the day when no one but me is home...it plays in the background of my blogging or scrapbooking usually on some sort of movie channel with few to no commercials. If it were up to me we would only have one television too...but John Mark had to put his foot down on that one.

Several years ago we celebrated Christmas at my house, and my Mother, Aunt and I were so excited because AMC was going to be running a musical marathon all day long. We couldn't have been happier flitting from Oklahoma, to The Music Man, and Singing in the Rain, but John Mark was furious! You see we were completely oblivious to the fact the he missed all kinds of football games that were showing all day long. The day after Christmas he bought a TV for our room. Technically if you do not like what is on the living room television...you could go back to our room for a second choice. That is the limit to what I will have for televisions in my house....no amount of begging will change that.

My girls tell me they are the only people they know with no TV in their room or computer. Although I know this is not true. I just feel that family togetherness is something to be valued, and if we cannot agree what to watch on TV...then we can turn it off and read or talk. Am I alone in this?

You are SO not alone. We have only 2 TV's in our house, same as yours: Living room and parent's bedroom. We also have ONE computer in the main room. We are really strict when it comes to tv watching, and as a matter of fact we only have an antenna - no cable, no dish. So, our kids' programming is all PBS or Netflix. This works great for us. Besides, kids are so busy nowadays, why would any of them need a tv in their rooms? When would they have time to watch it? I'm with you, sister!

I have to admit I'm the Queen of Mean at my house for very similar reasons...being a mother to girls is quite an experience! Great post!

They will continue to win in life if you continue to win this one. We are the same - don't even have cable - just what the antenna brings in. You might consider more than one computer - esp as they enter high school, but all in the same room - just like us! Barbara
