I am not a Brace Face

On Monday while I was busy with Regan getting her x-rays on her foot and finding out about her fracture....My other darling Rebecca, was getting her braces off. Hooray! One less bill at our house now. But seriously, Last year we had noticed that her teeth were funky looking coming in not quite straight. She had also started doing that whole "Mona Lisa" smile thing with her mouth closed. She said her teeth were so ugly that she didn't want to smile anymore. That just broke my heart, because good self-esteem is on the road to being a ruler of all she sees well-rounded child.

Our first trip to the Orthodontist confimed that her mouth was too small for all of her permanent teeth that were trying to push their way in. So basically they were coming in on top of each other. The Orthodontist put an expander in her mouth, and then in February she got her braces. Now not even a year later her teeth have been streched along her gums to properly fit in any new permanent teeth coming her way, and since she has two loose ones at the moment, we hope to see them fall into place exactly where we have paid for them they should be.

To help keep things in order she also got a retainer, and they look nothing like those big pink ugly plastic things I can remember. Rebecca picked out a zebra stripe with her name on it in hot pink. It is actually quite trendy and fun...who knew?

Did anyone of my readers have to wear the ugly big pink retainers, huge metal braces that you were in fear of lip-lock with your boyfriend, or the night gear alien looking stuff? Really please share all your horror stories to the delight fascination of all my readers.

My daughter got her retainer in a purple sparkle with her name on it too. Amazing things those orthodontists can do now a days. I remember a friend when I was little with those huge metal retainers that strapped around her whole head... Must have been awful.

No braces for me, but I did wear a retainer, one of the big ugly ones. But, they thought it would help, and it didn't. My moouth is too small also. What a pretty young lady your daughter is. Hope Regan's fracture heals quickly.

Wow, you seriously have to email me about this. I have so many questions. My 7-year-old has some seriously squiggly teeth, and the dentist told us that we should consider getting braces on him now on his BABY teeth, with no guarantee of not needing braces on adult teeth too! I don't think we can afford braces TWICE for one kid! What's the expander thing? How did this experience work out for your family?

Oh, you bet... big ugly pink retainer... I still have it,, haha, for like 28 years now. All 4 of my kids have had braces. Youngest still in them. You should see the retainer that they have had. Clear, plastic molded things that fit over their teeth, back and front... so it's invisible. Very similar to the invisaline braces. And best part is? They only had to wear it for 6 weeks. Nothing like the good old days...
And Texas Mamma... I would get a second opinion. I can't imagine a reputable orthodontist suggesting braces on baby teeth...

The day the braces come out is always great for both patient and orthodontist. For many children braces can be frustrating, but there is no doubt when we look back as adults at the results produced by the brace, then we are always glad that our parents insisted on the treatment. Great smiles often need coaxing with braces.

She's so pretty! Wonderful smile!

And as an adult my teeth shifted! Ugh. I hate it. It happened when I was pregnant, two of my lower teeth. I miss my straight teeth - but dont want braces NOW! LOL.

I had that wretched pink thing. I wore it a few times and that was it for me. I HATED IT! I never got used to talking with that thing in my mouth. I remember freaking out right after I got it because I sat it on my tray at lunch an accidently tossed it with my left over sheppard's pie. Of course my parents got me a new on, but wo no avail because I wore it so rarely that it stopped fitting right. Obviously that meant my teeth moved, but not enough to notice.
