Odd Baby Talk

Tonight we were at the girl's dance recital where once again Regan was a star performer. One of the great things about my girls is they need no excuse at all to be front and center stage (just like their mom). Regan is getting used to her new Kaye Walker, and still recovering from her foot fracture but that didn't deter her a bit from getting the chance to perform for several hundred people.

Her new walker has a pop down seat, so her dance teacher reconfigured Regan's routine to do it all from sitting in her walker. It was really pretty clever and she tapped away to "Jolly Old St. Nicholas" all in the comfort of sitting there.

Rebecca was very proud to spend her evening as the "assistant" dance teacher to the 3& 4 yr old dance classes. She was posted in the front corner of the stage and was the on stage demo for the little ones....who all adore her and follow her around like she is the pied piper.

Anyway, it was a wonderful evening until we were leaving out the door of our community center. An older woman (who I know meant well) proceeded to talk to Regan like she was an infant.

"You did soooooo good" (she says in a drawled out baby voice)
"You must be soooooooo proud of yourself"

Regan looked confused for a moment, and politely said Thank You. But once we were in the car she just couldn't stand it.

"How old does that woman think I am?"
"Does she think just cuz I can't walk well that I don't understand well either?"

Luckily she calmed down easily, and by the end of the night we were all teasing her by talking to her like a baby....."Regan wooks so sweepy...it must be night-night time for wittle girls".

But seriously, sometimes people are just idiots!

I so know what you mean and it drives me bonkers, to say the least! I can't even begin to count how many people have done that same thing to Logan. Somehow the fact that he's in a wheelchair and can't talk makes him a baby. Go figure. Hello people, he's going to be four years old! You're so right, sometimes people are idiots!

I'm glad she didn't dwell on it too long. My youngest daughter Mara gets the same treatment because she's very small for her age. It drives her crazy. She will actually just look at people and say "I'm not a baby!" Normally, I would hate to see her be rude, but hey I ran out of idiot spray! lol

Whoa, that sounds like a great opportunity for you two to talk about how some people mean well but don't understand. Like, when people stare at her and her differences, some people are a$$holes but some people are just curious. Like, that lady probably didn't mean to be degrading but she was. Her compliment was probably really heartfelt but just couldn't communicate herself well. Maybe she has a handicap too. Hers is just in understanding people who are different.
